Focus On….Emma Bridgewater for Sanderson

Emma Bridgewater founded her ceramic business in 1985 after she struggled to find the perfect birthday present for her mum. She saw a gap in the market for pottery that was both beautiful and practical.

Over 30 years later and the business is still run by her and her husband. The designs come directly from them, using their everyday family life as inspiration. For example, ‘Egg & Feather’ designed in 2001 is reminiscent of family holidays on the Norfolk coast, watching the nesting seabirds.

All of the pottery is still made in Stoke-on-Trent the traditional home of British pottery. The majority of the production is done by hand and all the designs are hand painted by talented artists. Their aim is to make everyday life a little nicer and only produce items that they believe are both beautiful and practical.

Although pottery has always been at the heart of the company they have recently added their designs to glassware, stationary, home accessories and even fabric and wallpaper.

The fabrics and wallpapers are produced by Sanderson, one of the most respected fabric suppliers in the UK. The fabrics reflect the informal, cheerful style that made the pottery so successful. Most of the designs are traditional Emma Bridgewater designs that can also be found on pottery. Sanderson work closely with the pottery studio to ensure the hand-crafted essence of the sponge ware is translated on to the fabric.

The colours used are inspired by the original ceramic colours but further colourways have been developed to create fabrics that could be used throughout the home. All the fabrics are suitable for curtains, soft furnishings and upholstery, which will help bring a room scheme together. The designs are printed onto natural, unbleached cotton, reflecting the natural earthenware clay used.

Within the collection you can also find wallpaper designs. Sanderson have chosen the simpler designs to translate into wallcoverings, helping to create a welcoming interior for everyone. The designs are mid-scale, fun and versatile in simple colourways.
